Berlayar Creek, Labrador and the Southern Ridges: A Trail-by-Trail Guide to the Green Edge Around Berlayar Close
Buyers looking at Berlayar Close are often told the parks are "on the doorstep". That is true, but it does not tell you which trails you would actually use, what each park is like, or which paths are closed right now. The green and coastal network around the Berlayar Close parcel is covered here, using NParks' own park pages. It also points out the closures that will affect a weekend visit to the area between now and 2027.
The Berlayar Close site is still at the Government Land Sales stage. The developer, project name, layouts, prices and launch timing have not been announced yet. Here we cover the setting, not the building.
Where the name comes from
HDB's brochures for the new Berlayar estate explain that berlayar means "sailing" in Malay. The name refers to Batu Berlayar, a granite outcrop that HDB says guided maritime traders to Singapore from as early as the 14th century. On the same coast, NParks' Labrador Nature Reserve page describes a replica Dragon's Teeth Gate. NParks notes that the original landmark was blown up in 1848 to widen the channel for ships. The heritage is modest, but it explains why so many streets, creeks and projects nearby carry the Berlayar name.
The four green spaces, park by park
| Park | Size (NParks) | What you go there for | Nearest MRT named by NParks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Labrador Nature Reserve and Nature Park | 22 ha | Keppel Coastal Trail, an elevated, wheelchair-accessible boardwalk through restored coastal beach forest; Dragon's Teeth Gate replica; World War II relics from a former British coastal fort | Labrador Park |
| Telok Blangah Hill Park | 34 ha | Terrace Garden with a 360-degree view; Forest Walk with a 1.3 km Elevated Walkway at canopy level and the harder Earth Trail; Henderson Waves | Not stated on the NParks page (access off Henderson Road) |
| Mount Faber Park | 56 ha | One of Singapore's oldest parks; Faber Point lookout over the southern coast and islands; Marang Trail climb | HarbourFront and Telok Blangah |
| The Southern Ridges | 10 km of linked green space | A continuous walk connecting Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, HortPark and Kent Ridge Park | Varies by entry point |
Henderson Waves in one line
NParks describes Henderson Waves as Singapore's tallest pedestrian bridge. It is 274 m long, was built to connect the nature areas along the Southern Ridges, and is lit with LED lights from 7pm to 2am daily. It is the link that turns the hill parks into one walk rather than separate outings.
The Marang Trail climb
NParks describes the Marang Trail at the base of Mount Faber as a 700 m footpath and staircase that takes about 15 minutes to climb. It is a useful benchmark if you want to judge how active a hill-park routine would be for your household.
What is closed right now, and until when
If you plan to walk the area before deciding, check these NParks notices first. They change what you will see on a visit:
- Berlayar Creek boardwalk at Labrador Nature Park: closed for improvement works from 3 June 2026 to 31 March 2027.
- Labrador Nature Reserve: some parts closed since 1 March 2023 for slope works. The Casemate and the Rocky Shore are closed for public safety.
- Mount Faber Park: a footpath section of the Mount Faber Loop has been closed since 14 January 2025 after a slope failure. Car Park D is unavailable for slope stabilisation works until December 2026.
- Telok Blangah Hill Park: a footpath below the Therapeutic Garden has been closed for slope works since 13 June 2025, with completion expected by 31 March 2028.
Most of these notices have an end date. The Casemate, the Rocky Shore and the 2023 slope-works closure at Labrador do not. Either way, they mean that a visit before 2027 will not show the Berlayar Creek boardwalk as a future resident would eventually use it.
What NParks says is coming, without dates
NParks groups these spaces into the Labrador Nature Park Network. The network lists the Southern Ridges alongside several areas still marked as upcoming: Berlayer Creek Nature Park (NParks' spelling), Alexandra Nature Park, the Park at King's Dock and enhancements to Pasir Panjang Park. NParks does not give opening dates on that page, so treat them as planned rather than scheduled.
Separately, HDB's Berlayar estate plan includes four green corridors, 30 to 60 metres wide, intended to link the Southern Ridges and Labrador Nature Reserve through the estate. How those corridors sit in relation to the Berlayar Close parcel will only be clear once a site plan is published.
Turning the setting into a buying decision
- Decide what "near the park" means for you. A household that uses the coast will value Labrador and the Keppel Coastal Trail differently from one that walks the ridge. Once layouts are released, the floor plans page and site plan will show which stacks face which way.
- Walking distances. No official walking times from the Berlayar Close parcel to each park have been published. Measure them yourself on a map once the project address and gates are confirmed.
- Do not pay for greenery twice. Protected parks are a lasting benefit, but they are not a reason to accept any price. Wait for official figures on the price page.
- Visit with the closures in mind. Pair a walk of the open trails with our location page, and register on the showflat page if you want the site plan when it is released.
General information only. Park facts and closure dates are taken from NParks pages as published and may change. Check NParks before visiting. Details of the Berlayar Close condominium have not been announced yet and will be added once they are officially confirmed.
